ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Fresno State volleyball team dropped its Mountain West opener at New Mexico in straight sets at the Johnson Center.
Fresno State (4-5, 0-1 MW) dropped sets 24-26, 14-25, 16-25 to New Mexico (11-2, 2-0 MW).
How It Happened
The opening set saw the Bulldogs use an early 6-0 run to take a 12-11 lead, but the Lobos answered back with a 7-2 run for a 18-14 lead. Five of the next six points went the way of the 'Dogs to lock up the set at 19-19 after a kill by Grace Doyle. With ties at 20, 21 and 22, the Lobos earned the next two points, but a kill by Sukhov and a service ace by Julia Handy tied the set at 24 before UNM closed out the set with back-to-back kills.
The 'Dogs kept set two within reach early, but a 13-5 run by the home team extended a one-point lead to nine at 19-10 and after the Bulldogs got within seven at 21-14 after a kill by Sukhov, the Lobos tallied the set's final four points.
Looking to avoid a sweep, the 'Dogs led 4-3 early and after a kill by Weiss and an attack error by the Lobos tied the set at 15, New Mexico closed out the set on a 10-1 run to seal the win.
Notables
- Fresno State dropped its Mountain West opener for the first time since Sept. 21, 2017 at Boise State.
- It was the first time the 'Dogs have been swept by New Mexico since Nov. 14, 2015 in Fresno.
- Sukhov led the Bulldogs in kills for the sixth time this season and also reached double-figure kills for the the sixth time.
