Today on Covino & Rich, Rich Davis is debating whether the 49ers should pay Brock Purdy big money or draft a new quarterback to build a deeper team. Steve Covino gives Purdy major credit for keeping things together despite the team's struggles and injuries, saying he’s proving himself more than ever this season. Both agree Purdy's been solid, but the question is: is he worth a huge payday?
Rich Davis:
"The 49ers are likely to miss the postseason. Now, there are two trains of thought: you pay Brock Purdy, he’s proven that with the talent or without it, he is clearly an above-average NFL quarterback... or do you say, 'No, no, make this team deeper, don’t give Purdy $50 million, maybe more. Draft a quarterback and see what the free-agent market looks like with some of these journeymen!'"
Steve Covino:
"I mean, you’ve got to give him props. Even during this season, when they are playing terribly and dealing with a lot of injuries, he has avoided really all criticism. I haven’t heard anyone say he is the issue or the problem. If anything, he’s keeping it together and rising above the fact that the team is injured. I think he’s proven himself this year more than the other years. One could argue that!"
