Jackson breaks 37-year old shot put record at WSU Open

SPOKANE, Wash. – Already having broken her personal best in the shot put twice in her first four attempts on Saturday at the WSU Open, Cierra Jackson went one step further, breaking the Fresno State school record on her fifth attempt with a toss of 16.74m/54-11.25. The mark surpassed Dot Jones' previous record of 16.34m/53-7.5 that had stood since 1986.

After her first two attempts, Jackson was dominant in her first shot put win this year, bettering the personal record she entered the day with on her final four throws. The sophomore's final three attempts would have all been good enough to win the competition. Jackson became just the second Fresno State athlete to surpass the 16-meter mark in the indoor shot put and fourth in the event regardless of season.

Finishing behind Jackson was teammate Jordyn Bryant who set a new indoor personal best of 15.44m/50-08. That mark moves the junior to No. 4 on Fresno State's all-time list ahead of Kayla Hopkins. The Bulldogs also claimed fifth (Amelia DiPaola) and eighth (Jocelynn Budwig) in the event.

Queen Okoh was narrowly pushed into third place in the triple jump following her new personal record. The senior's first attempt registered a mark of 12.22m/40-1.25, moving up to sixth on the program's all-time list.

Picking up a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters was Ceonna Pipion. The junior clocked a new indoor best of 55.78. Joining Brianna Sproles, Nakiya Buckner and Iyanna Ross in the 4x400 relay, the group finished third with a time of 3:48.71 to close out the three-day meet in Spokane.

The Bulldogs will split up next weekend between the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. and the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
